ARTICLE:10- AI IN LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT: THE FUTURE OF WORKFORCE UPSKILLING

INTRODUCTION

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping workforce upskills through learning experience personalization, increasing engagement, and automating back-office processes. AI based L&D solutions provide organizations with a cost-efficient process for equipping their employees with skills demanded by an evolving workplace. There are opportunities AI has to offer, however, as well as challenges that must be navigated by organizations so they can derive the maximum advantage from it.

AI-BASED PERSONALIZED TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

AI makes personalized learning possible by tailoring content to individual workers based on their learning style, performance measurement, and career aspiration (Henderson, 2017). Unlike traditional training systems, AI based platforms utilize adaptive learning algorithms to gauge advancement and provide personalized recommendations. Kolb's (1984) Learning Cycle, with its emphasis on experiential learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation is being integrated into AI based e learning systems to render employees more active.

For example, IBM and Microsoft use AI to offer workers individualized career guidance plans. AI analyzes unique skill gaps and suggests related training courses so that training aligns with company and worker goals (Armstrong, 2011). Additionally, AI powered virtual coaches provide instantaneous feedback, validating learning and raising the rate of retention.

CHANCES IN AI-POWERED E-LEARNING

There are numerous chances for AI powered e-learning to upskill the workforce:

1.     Greater Learning Efficiency: Learning systems that use AI apply data analytics to identify areas of knowledge gaps and deliver targeted learning interventions. The process follows Garvin et al. (1993) guidelines on systematic problem-solving, so workers acquire applicable competencies with an efficient process.

2.     Scalability and Accessibility: AI driven platforms provide affordable, scalable training options that are suitable for remote and global workforces. The combination of AI chatbots and virtual tutors provides ongoing learning assistance, reducing reliance on human trainers.

3.     Immersive Learning and Gamification: AI supports interactive learning processes through simulations, gamification, and virtual reality (VR). For instance, AI simulations allow employees to learn to think critically by mimicking real-world scenarios in a protected setting (Henderson, 2017).

4.     Continuous Learning and Talent Development: AI makes a culture of lifelong learning possible by offering workers tailored learning recommendations in line with shifting industry patterns and job requirements. This is consistent with the concept of the "learning organization," which promotes endless transformation through knowledge sharing (Pedler, Boydell & Burgoyne, 1997).

CHALLENGES OF AI BASED LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT

While its advantages, AI based L&D also poses some challenges:

1.     Data Privacy and Ethical Concerns: AI collects enormous amounts of employees' data in an attempt to offer personalized learning to all employees. Organizations must implement robust data security policies such that they comply with ethical as well as legislative standards (Armstrong, 2011).

2.     AI Algorithm Bias: AI algorithms can unconsciously generate bias in the sense that they are trained on biased data sets. Companies will need to keep an eye on and update AI algorithms from time to time to make sure that there is fair and even learning for everyone in the company.

3.     Resistance from Employees to AI-Based Learning: Employees will resist AI-based learning since they will lose their employment or will receive no interpersonal communication. Organizations would need to support the use of AI by implementing blended learning strategies that include AI-driven training and human intervention (Henderson, 2017).

4.     Implementation and Infrastructure Costs: It is a capital-intensive exercise to implement AI based learning solutions, requiring considerable investment in technology infrastructure. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) might be restricted by budget while deploying AI-based training programs.

CONCLUSION

AI is transforming learning and development for facilitating personalized data-driven upskilling experiences. While AI powered e-learning has a number of benefits, organizations must overcome data privacy, bias, and adoption issues in an effort to derive its maximum potential. Through the integration of AI into learning strategies while maintaining a human touch, organizations can facilitate a future-proof workforce that is robust.
